Newbie DB question

Although I have been programming in C/C++ for years now, the Pilot is a new
platform for me.  It looks like the records in a database are not required
to be the same size, but will require some programming effort.  Is this
true?  I have a variable number of variable length strings that will be
downloaded and would like them to not create a lot of unused space in
memory.
