Testing Serial Link - Special cable needed?

I want to test a program to see how it communicates
over the serial port.

Can I use the cradle the same as a standard serial port?
Or, does this work only in conjunction with hot-syncing?

Have not idea what's in, if anything, the cradle.  I would
just like to avoid buying another cable just for test.
