I've been following this thread because I'm also interested in quicker ways
to find/open databases.  One of my programs has to open 4 databases at
launch, and that can take over a second.

IIRC the more recent OS versions are quicker in doing this so I guess it
isn't that much of an issue.  Still, it is frustrating to stare at a blank
screen for almost a second :)
