Kinda off-topic, Palm TV commercial

I saw an interesting TV commercial where a young lady
was on a train.  She was interested in a young man on
a different train.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, they were both using Palms
and she beamed her phone number to the guy.

Now I know this is just TV but how far can a Palm 
actually beam to another Palm?  Is this different
for different Palm models?
