Your best bet is that you'll need to get some code ported to the Palm device and give it a try.  You can do all the machine cycle calculation you want but code has to hit silicon sooner or later ... even those who write in Java. :)

does that now
since you can do everything in software without the extra cost of an
MPEG chip.

So what's the verdict?  Do you need dedicated hardware or is 20 MHz
enough to do MP3?
