I second this. If it's a trigger at some times, good UI design dictates 
that it's a trigger at all times.

How about making a bitmap that is a grayed-out arrow that you can lay 
over the arrow the the trigger whenever there's only one item in the 
list? A user could still tap it, but since the arrow is grayed out, 
he'll likely not even try.

And yes, I know that grayed-out controls are contrary to the Zen of 
Palm.
