It ain't too hard (I learned C and palm in a couple of weeks evenings.)
Get the SDK, read the code for the built-in apps, while you're at the palm
site, pick up the NDA for the debug roms, and send it away ASAP, you'll need
them.
Seeing code for running, released apps will give you a very good idea of what
you need to do. Most situations you will run into are there in some form or
another.
