In my (limited) experience, it seems less a matter of advantage or
disadvantage, and more a matter of what your intention is for guiding
the user in the use of the UI you've provided for him. I've found the
modal dialog useful when my intention is to force the user to enter
certain information, and I don't want to allow him any other choice. A
regular form, on the other hand, is there for him to use if he so
chooses (that is, if he determines that is what he needs to do).
