Start by reading about the vCalendar format at: http://www.imc.org/

Then read the Exchange Manager documentation. You'll want to use Loopback mode so the 
"beam" goes back to the same device. This can be set programmatically or using 
shortcut-dot-t. You'll want to do the former. The filename (the name field of the 
socket) should be "foo.vcs" so that the Datebook app will "receive" the beam. 
Alternatively, you can specify the creator ID of the Datebook app, but this is perhaps 
less forward compatible. You should probably do both.

The only real problem I'd expect is that the user will see a progress dialog titled 
"Beam". This dialog won't stay up for very long, but it's still distracting.
