Connecting Palm V/Symbol SPT1740 to Windows 98 RAS?

I've got a client who's successfully hooked up a Palm III/Symbol SPT 1400 to
a Windows 98 RAS server (using a direct serial connection), but apparently
Palm OS 3.2/3.3 has broken this.

Has anyone successfully connected a Palm V or Symbol SPT1740 or Palm VII to
a Windows 98 RAS server using a direct serial connection?
