CMDIDE.EXE is what you are looking for.  If you run it without any options,
it tells you to use the "/?" option to get a help screen.  It works fine for
me.  What options are you trying and what errors is it reporting?

Well this CMDIDE.EXE shell thing is clunky but it does work.  The "/q"
option closes the IDE after finishing the build, so you should be able to
ignore the IDE popping up briefly during the build.  Especially if this runs
only in the middle of the night with nobody around to see it.

We have used it exactly that way with no problems.
