oh. empirically, you seem to be correct. (silly me for having read and
believed the documentation ;-).
since i build both a Debug flavor (all debug/symbol settings enabled) and a
Release flavor (all debug/symbol settings disabled), this doesn't actually
affect me. except perhaps to slightly reduce the size of my Debug builds
and slightly reduce my need to juggle object files and segments to fit
within the 16-bit jump offsets (i'm using Small memory model).
