It isn't as bad as it sounds.

What I ended up doing was encapsulating the serial managers into a
CSerialConnection class. So if the new managaer is not present, the calls
map to old serial manager, the "# of ports" function returns 1, and the
"enumerate ports" function returns a hard coded "0". When the new manager
is present, it uses the new calls, returns the proper # of ports, etc.

So our apps just list "Default Serial" in a popup pre OS 3.3, and the
actual ports for 3.3 and later.
