Toggling the backlight is what my app wants to do only part of the 
time. The rest of the time it wants to turn the backlight on, or turn 
it off. A toggle command would work if I could determine the backlight 
state.

There really should be an "official" way to at least detect the 
backlight state; an official way to explicitly turn it on/off would be 
icing on the cake. I have an app that needs it; I know there are others 
out there, too. Please don't make us use unsupported and likely-to-
break-in-the-future methods.
