Technically, each individual piece of hardware can/should have it's own
ROM. So you'll see on ROM for the Palm III, one for the Palm IIIx, one for
the Palm V, one for the Palm Vx, one for the Palm VII, one for the Visor,
one for the Symbol <blah>, one for the PDq, etc. etc.
In reality, Palm is the only licensee so far who's made Poser emulate their
hardware, so you often see only ROMs for Palm hardware. Also, some Palm
hardware can use the same ROMs. e.g. all the EZ based devices use the same
ROM, except the Palm VII which has special needs. (In reality, sometimes
code for both devices exists in the same ROM, so for example the 'EZ' ROM
supports both the software adjustable contrast in the Palm V and the normal
contrast in the Palm IIIx.)
The 'Color Device' doesn't actually exist as far as you know, but we knew
it was important for you to have some way to test your apps in real color
on upcoming products, so we made an emulated color device just for you.
(Well... not JUST for you, it was really handy for us to test the ROM as
well.)
>Does that mean we must have 3 versions of our apps?
Nope. One app can run on any device that supports Palm OS. For the app,
the OS release number is usually a lot more important than the hardware
type. e.g. an app written for the 3.5 OS may not work very well on the 2.0
OS.
>Do all 3 support color or just the 'color' ROM support color?
All 3.5 (and later) releases of the Palm OS support color, and can render
1, 2, 4, and 8-bit per pixel images. The actual on-screen result will vary
considerably depending on the hardware, of course.
