Is the grammer/syntax for these NMEA sentences available only in the $125.00 spec described by

http://www.nmea.org/0183.htm

or does anyone know of another source of the information.

Thanks - T.

For GPS receivers made specificaly for the Palm check out  http://www.randmcnally.com/gps/index.ehtml .  We don't currently make a Palm VII version but anything is possible in the future.

Our receivers, like may others, will send NMEA data without the need to send any data to it.  NMEA is a simple ASCII based protocol sent at 4800 8N1.  The message type you would look for is a RMC.  It looks something like this (I guess you know where I'm located now !):

 $GPRMC,010531,A,3645.6274,S,17443.5846,E,0.496,237.3,021099,19.5,E*54

Where fields (viewed in a proprotional font) are as follows:

 $GPRMC,053203,V,3648.4621,S,17444.4883,E,0.000,0.0,250999,19.5,E*45
Time  OK Lat         Lon          Speed Hd  Date   Mag var

The 'V' means there is no valid fix, it will change to an 'A' when the fix is valid.

There are other useful messages but this is proably not the forum to get into them.
