I don't know whether anyone @ Palm can answer this question sufficiently
in a public forum, but I would like to know the internal color depth of
a color device. It appears that right now such information is not
available through the color API, but after having a close look at how
the emulator presents the graphics I determined it looks like 4 bits per
color component, making for an 12 bit display. This would mean the palette
RGB entries are picked from a maximum of 4,096.

This information is important for color quantization purposes;
even when the palette values are input in range from 0 to 255
the intermediate colors are useless the hardware is able to display them.
For optimal performance in imaging application or just graphics in
general, the internal color depth of the device should be known.

If the first color devices will all be based on the same version of the
Motorola chip, it's apparent the color depth would be uniform; I trust
this is something that may well change in the future, though, so a call
for finding out the values would be important.

If there is such a trap in the OS already, then I'd love to have someone
point it out to me. :)
