I only used it for internal testing in order to verify the bug before
submitting it to 3Com. This code never appeared in any software released to
anyone else

Errr, while I applaud the general mechanism you describe as an effective
way of avoiding this bug, I'm not certain whether this would in fact be
allowed under the license that you signed to get access to the sources.
You might want to check that out.
