As far as I can tell, launcher category information is stored in
LauncherDB. The single record in the DB seems to get built and updated
dynamically by Launcher. There might be a launch code that can be used
to ask Launcher to change your category (similar to how you can ask Mail
to create outbound mail for you), but I doubt it.
In PalmOS 3.3, LauncherDB seems to contain just one record - as opposed
to individual records for each application - so you can't use standard
Data Manager calls to change which category you are listed in.

When a new application (prc file) is installed on the palm, it gets
dropped
into the "unfiled" category by default. Is there any way to force it to
drop into another category instead? A setting in the compiler perhaps?

I've downloaded several other palm apps, and so far they all seem to
exhibit
this behavior, but I'm hoping there is a way around it.
