I think a better way is to have a field that you can put the record 
in.  For example, in a program I wrote to do notetaking,
I put the name of the note in a field next to the title.  This was on a 
non-modal form, BTW.

I don't think what you're proposing is bad, but there are alternatives that 
might be better.  I think as long as the user knows
their context (program/form/whatever) it's probably okay.
