We use different approach: each of our applications has certain "block" that
contains the protection information. In the most simple case, this could be
just the UserName that appears in the About dialog. When a registered user
goes to our site he gets the list of the applications available for him to
download and when he clicks on a link a CGI invokes a little patch
application that knows what and how to patch the appropriate file before
sending it for download.

This approach has its advantages and disatvantages that you have to consider
for yourself. The whole server-side system was relatively easy to
implement - we were actually beta testing a prototype of commercial version
of this sytstem. You may find details on www.sildelta.com  - look for
