The server times out and drops the connection after just over a minute's
inactivity. (The (upcoming new) NNTP spec recommends a timeout of at least
three minutes.)
I agree -- it's a bit annoying because it's easy to spend a minute reading
a single message. But don't worry about it (and if you're using tin, get
used to pressing "yes I want to reconnect" a lot :-().
