You can't get the state via the Data Manager APIs!
Okay, so you probably knew that your remark was off-topic...
The problem is that "determining the current state of the backlight" is not
well defined. Not all devices have a backlight. You may not want to turn
off the backlight on all devices. (Turn it off on the IIIc for example and
you've got an unreadable screen.)
So the result is there is no platform API to determine the state of "the"
backlight.
If you need this, you can always hack. But if you're hacking, you
shouldn't expect us to make it easy for you! Hacks are, by definition,
unsupported.
The same goes for the data manager. If you mess with unsupported
structures, especially things like DatabaseHdrType, RsrcEntryType, and
RecordListType, your app is likely to break when the OS is updated. That's
why we stopped shipping the private header files. I don't think any of
these data structures actually did change in 3.5, so in fact apps that hack
these structures won't break in this release, but I have a feeling there's
a VERY good chance they'll break in the next one.
