It doesn't seem odd at all. In fact, it's a perfectly reasonable feature
request.
But "no" is a perfectly reasonable response to a feature request.
One of the bad things about this job is that see a lot of perfectly
reasonable feature requests. And since we're somewhat resource
constrained, we have to say "no" a lot.
What's worse, we sometimes have to say "no" to our OWN very reasonable and
even perhaps really exciting feature requests. Everyone who works on these
things has their own personal list of really cool stuff they'd love to add.
And we have to restrain ourselves: there are finite CPU cycles, finite
bytes, finite joules, finite days 'till the next release.
So the answer is simply no. At this time, there is no supported API for
dealing with the backlight.
Doing anything at all with the device outside of the supported APIs is, by
definition, hacking. (But don't let that stop you -- there are a lot of
really cool hacks out there for the Palm platform, and developers doing
weird and surprising things is part of what makes the Palm economy work so
well!)
