About 10 years ago I discovered a neat adaptation of grep, called
agrep, that performs approximate matching (and it ran about 10 times
faster than the grep that came with SunOS). The sources were freely
available, and they may still be floating around the net somewhere. I'm
sure there's something in there you can use. If you know how to use
archie, you should be able to find it.
