Actually it IS that hard! The challenge is correctly supporting all OS versions
- for < 3.0, WinScreenMode doesn't exist. For 3.1, it works, but does not allow
4-bit mode on the Palm V. etc. etc.

I need to do the same thing - set the screen mode for the maximum that the device
can support, but in a way that works on ANY OS (2.0 and up, anyway). Then, the
level of support (full OS or register hacking) is needed to work out how best
to write to the screen, and any hacks that need to be done to restore it afterwards
(e.g. for menus).
