Be very, very careful patching system routines in this area. You might
well be called at interrupt time, or on a different task, etc. Jim might
have specific examples of ways you'd die immediately, and/or perhaps
examples that he can't explain to you (yet).
If you're on 3.5 or higher, though, there's a simple and supported
mechanism: the Notification manager tells you about sleeping and waking.
