I'm posting this to the whole list just in case anyone else has the same
question.

There are some problems with Lyris' implementation of NNTP and Netscape's
news reader.  Lyris follows the NNTP RFC whereas Netscape follows the more
complete and complex NNTP reference standard (as I understand it).  The next
version of Lyris will support the NNTP reference standard.  I've done some
testing with the beta of that version and was able to download all 6000
message headers using Netscape's news reader.

I believe Lyris is planning on a release in a couple of months and I'll
upgrade our server as soon as the final version is available.

FWIW - I use Outlook and it seems to work very well.
