touchy memo pad records

My app is opening the memo pad db (read-only), reading 
through the memo pad entries, and closing the memo pad db.  
The next time I try to access the records in any way, I get an 
"err getting rec".  I reset, then everything's fine.  Does
anyone know why this is happening, even though I am
only reading the records?
