Assuming that you have ethernet available in the factory:
At PalmSource last year, Clarinet Systems was showing some ethernet to
IRDA devices.

Another approach might be to couple a single port terminal server and a
RS-232 to IRDA adapter (like the JetEye from Extended Systems).
