For non-Palm VII wireless data there's a number of technology choices:
CDMA - Sprint and Verizon support different data services in different
markets. The pdQ uses this service. Right now the data rate is 14.4. 56Kb
is rolling out in Japan now, but it will probably be slow in the US. CDMA
mostly exists in the US, Asia and Latin America. One advantage here is that
it is layered on the voice network so the build out is somewhat inexpensive
and has been paid for by the voice callers.
CDPD - This is what OmniSky uses. I'm not sure of the data rate, but think
AT&T actually operates the network. No integrated device, the modem snaps
on around our Palm. This does NOT include voice service.
GSM - Currently supports 9600. Uses more with Nokia and Ericsson phones and
popular in Europe but available lots of other places including here. I
don't think there is any integrated PalmOS device so people use IR or cable
between the Palm and the phone.
IDEN - This is operated by Nextel only and only Motorola makes phones. I
believe their service is 19200 or there abouts. Probably a cable between
your Palm and the phone is necessary.
I think the only fully integrated devices are the Symbol devices with
wireless LAN, the pdQ and the Palm VII, though the snap on modems aren't
too bad. For the pdQ phone info see www.kyocera.com. Qualcomm sold all
handset products to Kyocera.
A few other technologies I can think of that may be of less interested are
the 2.4 GHz wireless LAN (good only for a campus), AMPS cellular modems
(power hungry and none in useful form factor), Metrocom Ricochet (form
factor problems).
The nice thing about TCP/IP is that you can use what ever service or device
suits you at time and place.
