Actually, this is exactly your problem. If you hack the registers
directly, then there's no way for the rest of the OS to know the screen is
in a different mode. You have to use WinScreenMode (aka ScrDisplayMode) to
tell the OS that you're changing the depth.
You'll have to settle for no 4-bpp depth on EZ devices that are not running
the 3.3 OS. But note that 3.3 is a free update.
