That's the reason why A4-based data access exists. The reason it is the
*default*, however, is so that the standard libraries are built for this mode.
The standard libraries have to be built for one mode or the other. Given that
A4-based data access (assuming a programmer willing to read, understand, and
follow the full manual) can do everything that A5-based data access can do, but
not vice-versa, A4-based is the choice that has to be made for the standard
libraries.
This is a very deep problem first exposed by Abraham Lincoln 140 years ago as
House Divided. A house cannot stand divided against itself, and this is what
this whole A4 vs. A5 thing does. We have to choose one or the other. The former
gives a richer set of features in absolute impartial terms at the price of
programmer convenience. This sacrifice is very commonplace in the UNIX
Universe, and to do the opposite would be a crime against UNIX. This explains
the reasoning behind my design decisions.
