The different models have different mechanics. For example, the
connector on a Palm Professional and a IIIx are the same, but a
professional won't fit in a IIIx cradle (too narrow). The V series
switched connections, presumably because power was added to the cradle
for the rechargeable batteries.
In additional to the connector/mechanical issues, products which include
software that directly accesses the Moto CPU could have troubles on
different models because not all Palm units use exactly the same
processor or surrounding circuitry.

Subject: hardware compatiblity?
Hi,
I was wondering why clip on hardware is Palm version specific? For
example, why doesn't a Minstrel 3 work on Palm V, or Palm VII, or Street
Finder GPS works only on Palm III not IIIc or Palm VII. Isn't the serial
port the same for all? Since I've worked only on Palm VII, I don't know
much about others. I've just looked at the specs of these products. All
I want is clip on GPS for Palm VII. Any help?!?
thanks,
Neelesh
