The antenna in a "swing out" style is there for two reasons as I have been told.  The 
first is that an antenna sticking out without
any other metal around it gets better reception.  It also functions as a switch to 
turn the radio on.  Overall, this extends
battery life since there is a significance to the appearance and feel when the radio 
is turned on to make the user more aware that
the device is on the network.
