not backward compatible

Since graphic buttons do not display correctly in pre-OS 3.5,
I'm wondering how others of you have gotten around this.  Two methods
I've toyed with: different versions of each form (resulting in a larger
.prc)
or compiling with different resource files and using compilation defines
(resulting in less than easily maintainable code).
Has anyone found a better way?
