That'd be an undocumented side effect.

nilEvents are things that will come if you ask for them, and will come some
other times too (if other system things ask for them).  But trusting that
they'll come if you didn't ask for them would be a mistake.

Besides, a single tap in the Graffiti area will typically result in a state
change to punctuation mode.  So if you're not using Graffiti (like you have
Jot installed or something) the behavior might well be different.
