I don't know if this helps, but there is a way to map the hardware buttons
to any application you wish.  On the Palm, go to preferences, pick Buttons
from the top right drop down and from there any of the buttons (including
the HotSync button) can be mapped to any installed app.  There is also a way
to do this programmatically, which I'm looking into right now.  Actually, if
anyone knows offhand how this is done, let me know.

What I said above corresponds to item #1 in the three solutions listed (not
including the "trap hotsync only when the app is running" solution).
