It sounds like what you are actually saying, after starting off with "it is
most
convenient ... to get messages ... in digest form" is that the digest is not
actually very convenient . . .

Personally I've never understood the digest concept -- it makes it almost
impossible to reply easily to a single message, and as you note they
are large and unwieldy.  Oh, and breaking it up into smaller digests won't
make it take less time to go through them.  Say you get 1 digest of 100
messages or 4 digests of 25 messages ... you still have 100 messages
to go through, where do you expect to save the time?  You may as well
get each message on it's own.  You can then save time by reading the
subject line and just deleting w/o reading any message in a thread that
you have no interest in.
