From Palm, only the IIIe in mask ROM based. All others use flash. Handspring uses
mask ROM in all their Visors. Don't know about the other companies.

I had a similar problem. I ended up generating a device ID using a combination of the
clock, the HotSync username, etc. This was effectively a random number which is
unlikely to be the same on two devices. It's not impossible for two devices to end up
with the same ID when this strategy is used, but if you're careful, you can make it
astronomically unlikely.
