Hi Patricia, I just caught this thread....I guess I'm happy to see the book discussed at all these days, positively or negatively!
Regarding the Cobalt comments. At this point it may seem terribly misguided to have included a significant amount of coverage to Cobalt (kind of like when Petzold devoted an entire book to OS/2), but you just have to trust that at the time the book was being planned and written, PalmSource was quite seriously representing that Cobalt was the next Palm OS version to be released (Palm OS 6). Because of this, the publisher made a decision that the next update to the Palm OS Programing Bible (now called Professional Palm OS Programming) needed to cover how to program both Garnet and Cobalt, and they looked to me to help research and write up the newer Cobalt content. Unfortunately for many reasons the market prospects for Cobalt as a licensable OS declined shortly after publication, and with the benefit of hindsight it is clear that the Cobalt content adds little to the value of the book. What I'd like to make clear is that the inclusion of Cobalt programming information in no way takes away from the amount of relevant Garnet programming information in the book. Essentially the way to look at the book is that it is the prior published "Palm OS Programming Bible", with the _addition_ of new chapters and content covering Cobalt. Point being that even if you rip out the pages covering Cobalt, you are still left with amounts to a very valuable guide to Palm OS programming (the bulk of the excellent Garnet material was written by the great Lonnon Foster).
