The PalmSource User Interface Guidelines recommend that the leftmost
button on a modeless form have its left edge at 1 and it's upper edge
at 147. This leaves only one pixel (in standard coordinates) for a
border at the left and bottom edges. This, of course, works well for
stylus-based input. However the focus ring for one-handed navigation
is two pixels thick (in standard coordinates). Thus, when the
leftmost button has the focus, the focus ring cannot be completely
displayed -- the left and bottom borders are only one pixel thick. For
other buttons, the left border can be completely displayed, but the
bottom border is still only one pixel thick.
Of the built-in applications on the 650 (I haven't had the opportunity
to study this on later models), Memos, Tasks and SMS keep the leftmost
button in the standard location, but Contacts and MMS move it one pixel
to the right.
Do you think the buttons on the bottom of a form should be moved to the
right or up to allow the focus ring to be completely displayed? Does
your answer change if the program runs only on devices with focus ring
support? What about other UI elements, such as the category pop-up
menu in the upper right corner?
