Hi,
while I am not close to a clie atm and thus can't test on a component level, if 
passing chars works, we have a valid solution here.

Why not use the char as a flag to give the gadget a specific command, on which 
it then acts, e.g. By getting data from a round robin buffer 256 items high 
where the char is the adress of the ptr element.
