a nasty way to do this is send an SMS to some email address your
server can access. It will come there as if from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if the phone # is 555-666-7788. Then you can
have your server reply with the number. This works reliably, but of
course requires setting up such a server and at a cost af an SMS to
the user.

For GSM phones, it is not required for the phone number to be recorded
on the SIM, so if the phone number is not there, you might not be able
to retrieve it programmatically.
