Sounds like you want a toaster that makes a good cup of coffee.

You could write a hack that traps the modem hotsync button and checks for
the presence of your hardware.  If its there, launches your app.  If its
something else, it could just pass the button message on to the OS.
(although I'd just stick to a Visor if you need this functionality)
