On my Thinkpad laptop running XP, now with SP2, one day, 1-2 years

I had a similar problem and followed the steps at the end of this
article (the guy was having a similar but slightly different issue)
- did the trick for me though - YMMV

I followed these directions, ending with a repair reinstall of the latest Palm
Desktop/Hotsync Manager. When I plugged my TX, Windows did detect a new USB
device, but just warned me it might not work properly. And no, it still doesn't
work properly. No HotSync :(

I don't think I've ever tried to sync with XP. My home boxes are still
2K and I didn't have a 2nd cable so I set up the work unit (which is XP)
to work with the USB Bluetooth adapter. Every now and then I find that
the Bluetooth COM port has been reassigned to one different from what
HotSync Manager expects. When that happens I shut down HotSync Manager,
take out the USB Bluetooth Adapter, put it back in, and then restart
HotSync Manager.
Yes, it is a bit of a pain, but it lets me keep the Palm Desktop at home
in sync with the GroupWise[1] calendar at work.
