I'm going to have to pass on this one...:-)

The original 'Palm Programming' book was written before Palm OS 3.5 was
publicly announced.

A .r file is a Rez file which is a Mac OS text-based resource descriptor
file. Check out <UIResDefs.r> inside the Palm OS 3.5 SDK for how resources
how defined in Rez.

There is a Rez reference on Apple's Devworld:
ftp://ftp.apple.com/devworld/Tool_Chest/Core_Mac_OS_Tools/MPW_etc./Documentation/MPW_Reference/
Building_Progs_In_MPW.sit.hqx
Hope this helps :-)
