If you do a HotSync -v, you will see the following message in the log:
"Set user name on handheld"
This is when the user name gets set on the handheld. It is near the end of the
sync, which confirms what you have observed.

Your conduit should be able to get the user name from the CSyncProperties
structure passed into OpenConduit().
