How to find error texts from err numbers?

I'm trying to make our error-logging code log the system error messages 
that are associated with Err values.

I can't find a way to get them!

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here. Is there a function or snippet 
that will take an Err value and return the corresponding string ?
