If you want a GPS that you can use with or with out your palm I highly recommend a
Garmin GPS and they have quite a few models the
one I think would be nice to have for portability is the eTrex at
http://www.garmin.com/products/etrex/ or the eTrex Summit at
http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexsummit/ they are very reasonably priced. The only
thing I don't like about them is the fact
that they don't have an external antenna option. On the plus side they have a data
cable with the option of a either a DB9 pin
connector on the end or bare wires. With the bare wire cable you could get a hotsync
cable and cut the DB9 connector off of it and
wire up a nice compact cabal to go straight from the palm to the GPS with no bulky
adapter connections in the middle. There is my 2
cents worth
